Listen up, men!

Rain, hail or shine, sun protection is easily your best anti-ageing, skin preserving product.

Yep, you read that right. Maybe your partner has bathroom shelves packed with serums, creams and oils and is begging you to Netflix and sheet mask on a Friday night, but consistency will determine how your skin will age.

Sunscreen is obviously your go-to when you want to prevent burning, but SPF also does so much more. By blocking harmful UV and UVB it also helps prevent sun damage that can create premature lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. (UVB is the major cause of sunburn and increased skin cancer risk, while UVA contributes to ageing of the skin, as well as higher skin cancer risk.)

Let us look at why.

A network of collagen and elastin fibres supports your skin from underneath to keep it firm, smooth, and free of lines and wrinkles.

Collagen and elastin are like building blocks; to have a strong surface skin structure and youthful appearance, they need to be kept healthy and strong.

Heads up, sunlight, particularly the UV light rays, breaks down your collagen faster than natural ageing.

The sun causes around 80%-90% of skin ageing!

Think about what happens to the flesh of an apple when you cut it. That browning and shrivelling you see is damage from oxidative stress and free radicals. No one wants that happening to their skin!

You still need to wear sunscreen even when you are indoors. UVA light rays can travel through glass and into the skin, where they cause their problems.

So what is next?

SILK’s tip is to use sunscreen every single day! It needs to be the good stuff, so SPF50 is your new best friend. It should be the last step in your morning routine, and you should reapply every 2-4 hours, but more often after swimming, exercise and towel drying.

There are two types of sunscreens, mineral blocks and chemical blocks. They are both good, they just work differently.

Which one is for you? Mineral sunscreens tend to have a slightly heavier texture than chemical sunscreens from the nature of the minerals used in the formula. At SILK we have both types.

Ultra-Protection Sunscreen SPF 50+ is a very high protection sunblock designed to use every day. It is not sticky or greasy and won’t leave a white mask-like finish as many mineral-based sunscreens do. It comes in a 75ml tube, so it is best to use on the face. Remember to spread over your ears, lips, throat and back of your neck.

Face and Body Sunscreen SPF50 comes in a 200ml tube. It is an ultra-light texture, so a little goes a long way, making it perfect for the face and body. This one has patented technology inside. It blocks out the ageing UVA light rays while letting in enough UVB light so the skin can still produce Vitamin D, necessary for many healthy body functions, including boosting immunity.

Matte Sunscreen SPF50+ is designed for the face coming in a smaller 75ml tube. It is super light and extra skin-friendly. It has the highest protection rating in Australia sparing skin damage from UVA and UVB light rays.

There it is, how to get one up on preventing accelerated skin ageing. So, get to it and apply your SPF every morning!
